Democratic US Congressman Exposed as Anti-Gay – and He’s Got a Progressive Primary Challenger

A Democrat Against Same-Sex Marriage, Abortion Rights, and ObamaCare?

In 2018 it’s surprising to find Democratic U.S. Congressmen who embrace Republican policies and beliefs, but there’s at least one. Meet Rep. Dan Lipinski of Illinois.

Lipinski is opposed to same-sex marriage. ObamaCare. The DREAM Act. And abortion rights. He actually was an original co-sponsor of the First Amendment Defense Act (FADA), a bill that allows discrimination by people claiming their sincerely held religious views do not permit them to do business with LGBT people or same-sex couples.

Next week Rep. Lipinski will find out if his conservative values represent his district.

The Advocate reports Marie Newman is challenging Lipinsky in Tuesday’s primary.

Newman has been endorsed by six Democratic groups: NARAL Pro-Choice America, the Human Rights Campaign, MoveOn.org, Democracy for America, and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, and Daily Kos, according to The Intercept.

“We’ve been gunning for Lipinski for something like 10 years now, and until organized labor abandons him, it’s always an uphill slog. But he certainly has no business being a Democrat and would love to see Newman catch fire,” Markos Moulitsas, head of Daily Kos, told The Intercept.

Newman “became a rights advocate and formed a nationwide coalition of anti-bullying nonprofits after her child, who is transgender, was bullied at school. More recently, Newman met with state and federal lawmakers to discuss gun control, as part of her work with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America,” The Intercept added.

If you’re not yet convinced that Newman is a better choice for Illinois and America, let’s take a quick look at some more of Lipinsky’s unacceptable positions and votes.

Via OnTheIssues:

Voted YES on banning federal health coverage that includes abortion.
Bar funding for abortion under federal Obamacare plans.
Voted NO on prohibiting job discrimination based on sexual orientation.
Protect anti-same-sex marriage opinions as free speech.
$110M per year to teach abstinence in public schools.

And to be fair, not all Lipinski’s votes are bad. He voted to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. He voted to enforce against anti-gay hate crimes. He voted to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act.

But a far more progressive Democrat is what this country needs, and voters on Tuesday will decide if that’s what they want.
