5 Weeks After Parkland Betsy DeVos Finally Forms School Gun Safety Commission – and She Wants to Hear From You

“Members of the public with recommendations on how to increase school safety can send them…”

Shortly after the Parkland, Florida school massacre that left 17 people dead President Trump directed Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to create a commission to study the epidemic of gun violence in schools and come up with recommendations to make schools safer.

This week DeVos testified before Congress and was grilled about many topics – “ including why the Commission had yet to be formed. Democratic Rep. Katherine Clark of Massachusetts asked DeVos why the only members were four Trump Cabinet Secretaries, with no Democrats, experts, or students.

DeVos said she wanted to “move quickly without getting bogged down in a lot of bureaucracy.”

Friday afternoon the Dept. of Education released a memo stating the Commission has officially been formed. Its first meeting – which will only be to create a format for the commission – “ will be Wednesday, March 28.

The very last sentence of the announcement reads: “Members of the public with recommendations on how to increase school safety can send them to safety@ed.gov.”
