White House: Trump Supports ‘Efforts’ to Improve This One Aspect of the Existing Gun Background Check Process

‘Discussions Are Ongoing’

Five days after a 19-year old gunman shot to death 17 people, mostly students, at Florida’s Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School, the White House is announcing President Trump supports “efforts” to strengthen reporting within the existing gun background check process.

“While discussions are ongoing and revisions are being considered, the president is supportive of efforts to improve the federal background check system,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Sunday, according to Fox News.

But Monday morning CNN explains “that Trump spoke with Sen. John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, on Friday about a bill he introduced with Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, that aims to strengthen how state and federal governments report offenses that could prohibit people from buying a gun.”

Those are the “efforts” the president “is supportive of.”

Specifically, the bipartisan bill improves “how” offenses are reported. For example, the U.S. Military has acknowledged it failed to report over 4000 dishonorably discharged military personnel who should be banned from purchasing guns under current laws.

The White House has not said the president supports any new legislation to ban military-style assault weapons that have been used in nearly every mass shooting, or any other new gun control legislation.

President Trump’s campaign benefited from over $30 million in support from the NRA.
