‘How in the Hell Was He Still Employed?’: GOP House Oversight Chair Makes Surprise Announcement on Rob Porter Scandal

‘How Do You Have Any Job if You Have Credible Allegations of Domestic Abuse?’

The Chairman of the House Oversight Committee made a surprising announcement Tuesday morning. Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) expressed his frustration with the White House’s hiring of Rob Porter, the now-former Trump White House staff secretary accused of domestic abuse.

“How in the hell was he still employed?” Gowdy asked CNN’s Alisyn Camerota. “How do you have any job if you have credible allegations of domestic abuse?”

On Tuesday FBI Director Christopher Wray decimated White House talking points that it did not know about the allegations that Porter physically and emotionally abused both his ex-wives.

Any Republican speaking out against the Trump White House is surprising in itself, but Gowdy has announced he will not be seeking re-election.

Also surprising is Gowdy’s next statement: The House Oversight Committee launched an investigation into the Rob Porter scandal Tuesday night.

Gowdy, unfortunately, appears to be focusing his investigation on the FBI, and not the White House. The FBI is not responsible for issuing security clearances – that’s done through the White House. The FBI only provides results of its investigations.
