DACA Fix DOA as Senate Kills Bills After Trump Tweets

McConnell Blames Democrats

After weeks of negotiations, after the president promising to sign any bill that comes to his desk, after tentative agreement on a bipartisan immigration bill that would protect undocumented immigrants President Trump threw into limbo, the president posted two angry and false tweets about a DACA fix that was slated to pass, and the Senate just killed it.

For now, any immigration fix – there were four before the Senate – is dead. The Senate has blocked three and the fourth will not pass.

President Trump, immediately after posting two threatening tweets filled with false facts, followed them up with a statement on the legislation most likely to pass, in which he invoked 9/11 in talking about immigration and DACA recipients.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who has become a professional legislation derailed, did exactly that.

Then attacked the Democrats for failing to pass a DACA fix.

“Remember: Democrats wanted this debate,” McConnell told his fellow Senators, as Politico reports. “They shut down the federal government for 300 million Americans — unnecessarily — to guarantee we could have this debate at this time.”

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes weighed in before the vote, anticipating what the outcome would be.

700,000 DACA recipients now have only the courts to protect them, unless and until lawmakers can find another path.
