Alabama High School Suspends Two Girls After One Asks Her Girlfriend to the Prom

Two girls were punished by their high school after one of them asked her girlfriend to prom during a school talent show.

The girl who made the invitation and another student who helped her were each sent to in-school suspension Wednesday, a senior student told AL.com.

Student Ashley Fadely told the website the girlfriend who was asked to prom was performing in the show, but she was not disciplined.

Alexandria High School officials said the invitation was a “disruption,” according to Fadely.

Classes were dismissed soon after Tuesday, so the two girls were not disciplined until the following day.

“I was there when it happened. It was right after her performance. No words were spoken by them. They just got happy, hugged and that was it,” Fadely said.

The student claims other students have asked each other to prom, and she said students have even proposed marriage at the school — but they were all heterosexual couples.

“If it was a male and a female student, nothing would have been done,” Fadely said.

She said students may boycott prom if the two girls are not allowed to go together.

“I don’t think it was right that they might not be allowed to go to prom,” Fadely said. “I’m not going to prom. Some students have been trying to get refunds for prom.”

The principal and Calhoun County Schools superintendent did not respond to requests for comment about the situation.
