Tony Perkins Says Evangelicals Have Given Donald Trump a ‘Do Over’ for Stormy Daniels

‘You Get a Mulligan. You Get a Do-Over Here’ Perkins Says

The man who has spent much of his adult life in a religious war against LGBT people, denouncing, defaming, and advocating against even the concept of two people in a loving, monogamous, civil, legal marriage, has no problem with the president of the United States (allegedly) having a year-long affair with a porn star then paying her $130,000 in hush money weeks before the election.

Tony Perkins, head of the faith-based Family Research Council, which appears on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s list of anti-gay hate groups, tells Politico Magazine President Trump’s immoral behavior gets a pass.

“We kind of gave him—‘All right, you get a mulligan. You get a do-over here,’” Perkins says on Politico’s Off Message podcast.

“Perkins knows about Stormy Daniels, the porn actress who claimed, in a 2011 interview, that in 2006 she had sex with Trump four months after his wife Melania gave birth to their son Barron,” Politico explains. “He knows of the reports that she was paid off to keep the affair quiet in the waning weeks of the 2016 election. He knows about the cursing, the lewdness and the litany of questionable behavior over the past year of Trump’s life or the 70 that came before it.”

How does Perkins and his clan of merry moralizing Christian anti-gay extremists excuse Trump’s history and behavior?

Evangelical Christians, says Perkins, “were tired of being kicked around by Barack Obama and his leftists. And I think they are finally glad that there’s somebody on the playground that is willing to punch the bully.”

In other words, the enemy of my enemy is my hero.

“I think the president is providing the leadership we need at this time, in our country and in our culture,” Perkins says.
