Reaction to Trump’s SOTU Worst in Decades

Lowest Since Poll Began

President Trump’s first State of the Union address was overall the worst-received in decades. CNN polled viewers who watched Trump Tuesday night. And while 48 percent of viewers said they had a “very positive” reaction to Trump’s SOTU, it was “the lowest net positive rating for a State of the Union address since at least 1998, when CNN first asked the question.”

That 48 percent is also a dramatic drop from Trump’s 57% after his first address to a joint session of Congress, one year ago, but matches President Barack Obama’s score after his first State of the Union, when the nation was in the midst of an economic crisis.

Overall, 70 percent of viewers had a positive reaction to Trump’s first State of the Union, 29 percent had a negative reaction. By comparison, 78 percent of viewers of President Obama’s first SOTU had a positive reaction, 21 percent had a negative reaction.
