Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Announces Hiring of Law Clerks Through 2019

Retirement Unlikely

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the de facto head of the progressive wing of the Supreme Court, has announced the hiring of law clerks through the 2019 term.

“The announcement bucks ongoing speculation that Ginsburg, 84, is nearing retirement,” Newsweek reported Friday. “Typically, justices planning on stepping down don’t hire all of their clerks for the upcoming term.”

Above the Law, which provides news and insights about the world of law, provided the list of Supreme Court clerk hires:

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg
1. Alyssa Barnard (Columbia 2015 / Nathan (S.D.N.Y.) / Katzmann)
2. Marco Basile (Harvard 2015 / Watford / Barron)
3. Susan Pelletier (Harvard 2016 / Garland)
4. Michael Qian (Stanford 2016 / Garland / Bristow Fellow)

“I can’t imagine what this place would be — I can’t imagine what the country would be — with Donald Trump as our president,” Ginsburg told The New York Times in an interview published in July 2016. “For the country, it could be four years. For the court, it could be — I don’t even want to contemplate that.”

Ginsburg subsequently apologized, noting that “judges should avoid commenting on a candidate for public office. In the future I will be more circumspect.”

Trump, naturally, attacked her on Twitter for the apology—advising “her mind is shot” and calling for her to resign. Ginsburg, thankfully, did not resign.

Months later, and nearly a year into the Donald Trump presidency, it isn’t Ginsburg’s mental state that’s being questioned—it’s Donald Trump’s. Early Saturday, just six days into 2018, the president asserted he is a “very stable genius” and noted that his two greatest assets were “mental stability and being, like, really smart.”

The claims, which Twitter users quickly noted were ridiculous, follow Michael Wolff‘s bombshell tell-all “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, as well as Yale University psychiatry professor Dr. Brandy X. Lee’s warnings to Capitol Hill lawmakers that Donald Trump is unstable, and is only going to get worse.

“We feel that the rush of tweeting is an indication of his falling apart under stress,” Lee told the lawmakers.

In July, Ruth Bader Ginsburg told the New York Times she intends to remain a Supreme Court Justice “as long as I can do it full steam.” Her voice is essential for LGBT equality cases that head before the nation’s highest court.

In December, the court reviewed the Masterpiece Cakeshop case, in which an anti-gay Christian baker refused to sell a same-sex couple a wedding cake. As NCRM has reported, the Supreme Court was seen as dismissive and skeptical of LGBT civil rights in the case.

While no final judgments should be made about how justices will rule, reporters who covered the case noted that Ginsburg was “extremely skeptical” of the anti-gay arguments.

Fox News Goes Full White Supremacist With Republican Who Says ‘Hope and Change’ Means ‘Replace the American Electorate’

Published

Fox News has gone full white supremacist. The right wing cable network’s top primetime host, Tucker Carlson, has been promoting the racist “great replacement” conspiracy theory since April, doubling down on it this week. But now Fox News’ daytime programming is totally on board, embracing that racist rhetoric.

On Friday “Fox & Friends” hosted U.S. Rep Brian Babin, who spewed the “great replacement” conspiracy theory, adding a new racist twist.

According to the Texas Republican, former President Barack Obama’s “Hope and Change” slogan means “change America” by replacing “the electorate with third-world immigrants that are coming in illegally, many of them COVID-positive.”

Babin repeatedly said “change America,” honing in on the white supremacist conspiracy theory of “replacement,” a concept seared into the minds of many Americans who saw the tiki-torch wielding neo-Nazis marching through Charlotte chanting, “You will not replace us.”

“We know what the grand strategy of the Democratic Party is,” Congressman Babin declared. “They want to change America, ‘hope and change,’ and it started under Obama and now it’s really going to just racehorse speed.”

“They want to change America, they want to they want to replace the American electorate with third-world immigrants that are coming in illegally, many of them COVID-positive, drug resistant tuberculosis, I’m a health care provider, I can tell you it’s a disaster down there from a public health standpoint, and they are just want to change the electorate and put these people on a path to citizenship and franchise them with a vote and have a permanent majority. On every phase we can see every aspect the Democrats are trying to change America, from what we know what we love and what we have enjoyed for 244 years, right, it’s despicable.”

‘It’s a War’: Trump Pleads With Employees as NY Prosecutors Look to Crack ‘Mob-Like Code of Silence’ – Report

Published

on

New York prosecutors are attempting to exploit a “Shakespearean” internal conflict at the Trump Organization between two rival dynasties, as they aim to crack the company’s “mob-like code of silence,” according to a new report from the Daily Beast.

Former president Donald Trump, aware of prosecutors’ strategy, has been reminding employees to “stick together” and stay strong, according to the report.

The internal conflict pits the Weisselberg family — whose patriarch, Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg, has been indicted in a 15-year tax-fraud scheme — and the Calamari family, led by Chief Operating Officer Matthew Calamari Sr.

“They hate each other. It’s a war,” Allen Weisselberg’s daughter, Jennifer, who has become a witness for New York prosecutors, recently told the Daily Beast.

Trump himself has always seemed to be New York prosecutors’ chief target in the ongoing probe, but in order to get him, they’ll need his right-hand finance man, Weisselberg, to flip, according to the report.

In order to get Weisselberg to flip, prosecutors are attempting to leverage the CFO’s assistant, company controller and accountant Jeffrey S. McConney. So investigators have been trying to get Calamari’s son, Matty Jr., to provide damning information about McConney, who prepared his individual taxes.

According to the report, it has become “common knowledge” in the upper echelon of Trump’s business and personal circles that prosecutors are attempting to exploit the rivalry between the two families.

“It’s gotten so apparent that, in multiple meetings and phone calls since the spring, Donald Trump has reminded business associates and other members of his inner orbit about the need for Trump Organization staff to ‘stick together’ and stay strong, according to two other people familiar with the matter,” the Daily Beast reported. “The enmity between the Weisselbergs and Calamaris dates back decades, and it centers on their unwavering love of Trump. Two longtime associates described a Shakespearean conflict of rival dynasties, with dukes competing for the king’s favor.”

Earlier this week, Weisselberg’s attorney said in court that he has “strong reason to believe there could be other indictments coming” in the investigation — which prosecutors have been aggressively pursuing.

Read: Letter to Steve Bannon From House Jan. 6 Committee Ordering Him to Appear in Three Weeks

The bipartisan House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack issued subpoenas to four of Donald Trump’s closest deputies Thursday night, ordering them to produce documents and appear for depositions.

The four are Steve Bannon, Mark Meadows, Kash Patel, and Dan Scavino.

“Stephen Bannon,” Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) writes on the committee’s official website, “reportedly communicated with former President Trump on December 30th, 2020, urging him to focus his efforts on January 6th. Mr. Bannon also reportedly attended a gathering at the Willard Hotel on January 5th, 2021, as part of an effort to persuade Members of Congress to block the certification of the election the next day. Mr. Bannon is also quoted as stating, on January 5th, that ‘[a]ll Hell is going to break loose tomorrow.'”

In his letter to Bannon, Chairman Thompson writes, the “inquiry includes examination of how various individuals and entities coordinated their activities leading up to the events of January 6, 2021.”
