Hawaii Mistakenly Issues Ballistic Missile Threat Advising ‘This is Not a Drill’

Residents and tourists in Hawaii were startled as their phones alerted them to an incoming ballistic missile threat on Saturday, now confirmed to have been a “false alarm.”

“BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII,” notifications read. “SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”

Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency’s social media channel subsequently advised there was no actual threat, though details are still limited:

In December, given Donald Trump’s Twitter tantrums and the devolving relationship with North Korea, Newsweek reported that Hawaii had begun to “prepare for a nuclear attack… with the island state taking its first serious precautions in decades for a possible missile strike.”
