Australia Celebrates as Same-Sex Couples Begin Legally Marrying for the First Time

Same-sex couples across Australia are able to marry legally today for the first time. The Australian Parliament in December passed a law almost unanimously after many hours of debate, and a month after more than 60 percent of Australians in nationwide plebiscite said they support marriage equality.

Athletes Craig Burns and Luke Sullivan were some of the first people to tie the knot shortly after midnight on Tuesday morning, just over a month after the same-sex marriage legislation cleared parliament on December 7, 2017,” Australia’s The New Daily reports.

“Sunrise,” an Australian morning TV news show, featured one couple, Michelle Edwards and Zoe Nolan, who chose a wedding with an ocean view.
