Couple Has Been Together Seven Years
On Monday as Australia’s lawmakers were debating a same-sex marriage bill Tim Wilson ended his speech advocating for equality by setting a good example: he proposed to his partner who was sitting in the gallery.
“In my first speech I defined our bond by the ring that sits on both of our left hands, and they are the answer to a question we cannot ask,†a tearful Wilson said, speaking of his first speech to the House of Representatives, as the AP reports.
“There’s only one thing left to do: Ryan Patrick Bolger, will you marry me?†Wilson, choking back tears, said. Applause filled the chamber. The proposal and the acceptance were officially recorded.
Bolger, 33, is a school teacher. Wilson is 37. The couple have been together for seven years. The news and the video have spread across the western world.
Last month 61.6 percent of Australians said in a postal plebiscite they support the right of same-sex couples to marry. Same-sex couples in Australia are hoping to be able to marry by Christmas, but technical issues may delay that until January.
