Watch: Sen. Gillibrand Calls Trump’s Harassing Tweet Attacking Her a ‘Sexist Smear’

‘I Will Not Be Silenced on This Issue’ Gillibrand Says

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, one of four Democratic U.S. Senators who called on President Trump Monday to resign over the sixteen or more sexual assault allegations against him, has just responded to his misogynistic and harassing tweet attacking her. Trump did not attack any of the others who called on him to resign.

“It was a sexist smear attempting to silence my voice,” the Democratic Senator from New York told reporters late Monday morning.

“I will not be silenced on this issue, neither will the women who stood up against the president yesterday,” she added, “and neither will the millions of women who have been standing up since the Women’s March to stand up against policies they do not agree with.”

Sen. Gillibrand refused to classify Trump’s tweet as “sexual harassment via tweet,” as one NBC News reporter asked.

“It’s not going to silence me. It’s intended to silence women who have stood up directly against him.”

Monday morning Trump posted tweet attacking Gillibrand that many called sexually harassing, and many said included allegations of prostitution. Trump claimed Sen. Gillibrand was “begging” him for donations, “and would do anything for them.”

Gillibrand was the only woman, and only one of four Democrats who called for Trump to resign on Monday. Trump responded only to Gillibrand.

Sen. Gillibrand on Tuesday also called for opening an investigation into the sexual assault and harassment allegations against Trump “the right thing to do,” and urged Congress and voters to support an investigation.
