Senator Jeff Flake: Trump Inviting Independent, Republican Challenges in 2020 (Video)

Continues to Support Trump’s Agenda

Retiring Republican Senator Jeff Flake believes that Donald Trump’s trajectory in the White House is inviting Independent and even Republican challengers in the 2020 presidential election.

“I do believe that if the president is running for re-election,” Flake told Jonathan Karl on ABC’s “This Week on Sunday, “if he continues on the path he’s on, that that’s going to leave a huge swath of voters looking for something else.”

“So you’re saying, if he is the Republican nominee,” Karl responded, “we’re likely to see an Independent candidate, whether or not it’s you—”

“He’s probably inviting a Republican challenge as well,” Flake said. “Certainly and Independent challenge, yes.”

Jonathan Karl offered this take on the exchange:

Last month, Flake was caught on hot mic criticizing both his party and its figurehead. “If we become the party of Roy Moore and Donald Trump, we are toast,” he told Mesa, Arizona’s Mayor John Giles, who appeared to be pushing Flake to challenge Trump in 2020.

In a speech announcing his decision not to seek re-election, Senator Flake labeled Trump’s “reckless, outrageous and undignified behavior” as a danger to democracy, though he was also chastised for continuing to support Trump’s agenda.
