Russian Senator Likens Rights of Gay People to Rights of Dogs in Arguing Against Animal Cruelty Bill

‘We Treat Many Western Fads With Humor’ Senator Says

The Chairman of the Russian State Duma Healthcare Committee is not in favor of protecting animals from cruelty, nor is he in favor of protecting gay people. And he apparently sees the two as equals.

Senator Sergei Kalashnikov “warned of the slippery slope that legislators risked taking by passing a law against animal cruelty,” The Moscow Times reports.

“We treat many western fads with humor, including political correctness, the rights of sexual minorities and others,” Kalashnikov said before lawmakers voted to block a bill that would have protected animals from cruelty.

“Any thought, however humanitarian, becomes absurd when carried to its logical conclusion,” the Communist Party Senator said.

“We’re not only passing a law that won’t work for many reasons, but we’re also demonstrating that we’re following the same path, so to speak, of defending the rights of sexual minorities.”

The vice-chairman of the Agrarian Committee, Sen. Stepan Zhiryakov, took offense, saying that dogs “should not be equated to sexual minorities.”
