Roy Moore’s Campaign Strategist Uses Air Quotes and Says Same-Sex Couples Are Pretending to Be Married
‘He Talks About the Homosexual Ruling, When They Can Be – Pretend to Be Married’
Roy Moore’s fast-talking campaign strategist Dean Young says gay people are just pretending to be married. He also used the word “homosexual” and gestured air quotes.
Young appeared on MSNBC’s “Meet the Press Daily” Friday, and answered Chuck Todd’s questions about why the twice-booted former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice had said the last time America was great was during the time slavery was legal.Â
“I think it was great at the time when families were united — even though we had slavery — they cared for one another,” Moore had said. “Our families were strong, our country had a direction.”
Defending the embattled GOP candidate who has credibly been accused of child sexual molestation and sexual assault, Young said Moore has talked about the Dred Scott decision, and then said:
“When he talks about the homosexual ruling, when they can be – pretend to be married – Judge Moore says it’s like the Dred Scott decision.”
As Young says “homosexual ruling” he raises his fingers and repeatedly makes air quotes.
Chuck Todd did not offer any push back, just said, “OK.”
To be clear, Young is defending Moore by comparing the case that determined same-sex couples have the right to marry with what most historians believe was the worst-decided case in U.S. Supreme Court history.
The segment is in the above video and starts just a few seconds past the 5:00 minute mark.
On Twitter, some who were watching expressed outrage.
@chucktodd did you just let Moore’s campaign person get away with comparing the marriage equality verdict to Dred Scott and then say “Pretend to be married?â€
What in the actual fuck?

AND HE SAID “HOMOSEXUAL PRETEND TO BE MARRIED” – @chucktodd said nothing in rebuttal, just let the hate speech be spewed on @MSNBC #firechucktodd

That was robably the 20th least bad thign he did today on his show. He let Moore’s staffer say homosexuals “pretend” to be married and used actual air quotes. Also let him lie about partial birth abortion and Nelson’s story. #firechucktodd

I typically like @chucktodd, he usually brings a calm, centrist voice during @MeetThePress, which is why it’s was that much more hurtful when he didn’t so much as blink today while an #Alabamabigot states that #gays only pretend to be married. Viewers deserve better than that.

I just heard Dean Young,Roy Moore’s spokesman, speaking on MSNBC about bad Supreme Court decisions. He referred to “homosexuals pretending to be married.†It’s the law of the land but what does that matter to these absurd people?!

My wife and I just watched a head campaign person say “#NoMoore believes gay marriage or, as they pretend to be marriedâ€. We ARE married and we live this each day in Alabama. This man can’t take this State backwards even more! Keep spreading the word! @GDouglasJones Dec. 12! pic.twitter.com/P1Iij0xKkJ

Roy Moore’s white supremacist, godless, lying campaign strategist who loves a pedophile just said “homosexuals” are pretending to be married. You’ll spend more time in hell than you will in DC, asshole. #MTPDaily

“Gays can PRETEND to be married..” WTF! #MTPDaily
— Simon Byrd (@Uosdwis) December 8, 2017

Chuck, Chuck…softball interview of Dean Young. You didn’t press him on anything!
— Beth Hemphill (@BethHempie) December 8, 2017
“The homosexual ruling where they can pretend to be married.” Why did you let Dean Young say this without pushing back @chucktodd?
— A Little Royal (@alittlebitroyal) December 8, 2017
