Politico: Paul Ryan Tells ‘Closest Confidants This Will Be His Final Term as Speaker’
Ryan Reportedly Does Not Plan to Seek Re-Election to Congress Next Year
Speaker of the House Paul Ryan has told some of his “closest confidants that this will be his final term as speaker,” Politico is reporting in a  lengthy profile of the Wisconsin Republican Congressman. Ryan was elected Speaker after his predecessor, embattled Speaker John Boehner resigned in 2015.
Politico notes the reason Speaker Ryan wants to gut “entitlement” programs like Social Security and Medicare, is because he sees his time with the gavel as short.
“Despite several landmark legislative wins this year, and a better-than-expected relationship with President Donald Trump, Ryan has made it known to some of his closest confidants that this will be his final term as speaker,” reports Politico, which says it interviewed three dozen “lawmakers, congressional and administration aides, conservative intellectuals and Republican lobbyists…who know the speaker.” It adds, “not a single person believed Ryan will stay in Congress past 2018.”
Ryan “consults a small crew of family, friends and staff for career advice, and is always cautious not to telegraph his political maneuvers. But the expectation of his impending departure has escaped the hushed confines of Ryan’s inner circle and permeated the upper-most echelons of the GOP.”
Politico makes clear Ryan would not only resign as Speaker but resign from Congress, or not seek re-election.
Ryan has a very viable and personable Democratic opponent:
In the close to 24 hours since Doug Jones’ victory, our campaign has raised nearly $50,000.
This is what a wave looks like.
Help us reach our $50,000 goal to send a message heard around the country. This wave is going to crash straight into Paul Ryan.https://t.co/xbWrFxk9WI

Here’s the video Ryan released when he became Speaker. By his own standards he’s accomplished little.
