NBC News’ MSNBC is drawing the Internet’s ire for its separation from progressive Political Analyst Joan Walsh.
Walsh, also the National Affairs Correspondent for The Nation, shared the news late Friday via Twitter. “Wow. I’m overwhelmed,†she wrote. “I didn’t expect this news to break tonight.â€Â
Wow. I’m overwhelmed. I didn’t expect this news to break tonight. I’ll have something to say in the morning. Just baked some pies with @NoraWD and now it’s time to sleep. Thank you all. xo

Early Saturday, Walsh elaborated. “So it’s true: after 12 years on MSNBC, six on contract, I learned Friday night they are not renewing,” she wrote. “I’ve given my heart and soul to the network, from the George W. Bush years through today. I’m proud of the work I did.”
“Yes, it’s Christmas weekend. I was baking pies with my daughter, who is home for the holidays, when I got the news,” she continued. “It didn’t feel too good. But all of your support helps, a lot. I’m grateful to the people who have fought for me.”

MSNBC’s Joy Reid, host of AM Joy, noted that Walsh was the “first person to ever pay me to write.†She further advised that her “incredibly valued colleague… belongs on the air speaking, especially in times like these. We need progressive women’s voices.â€
.@joanwalsh was the first person to ever pay me to write, back when she was the editor of @salon. She is now my friend, my incredibly valued colleague and my documentary partner. She belongs on the air speaking, especially in times like these. We need progressive women’s voices.
— Joy Reid (@JoyAnnReid) December 23, 2017
Reid continued:
It’s incredibly short sighted to sideline voices like Joan’s, especially now. Especially given the momentousness of next year’s anniversaries: the women’s march, the King and RFK assassinations … we need to be at full strength as media entities, and Joan belongs in the mix.

Other progressive voices and fans of the journalist quickly weighed in, criticizing the outlet’s decision:
Just heard @joanwalsh is out at MSNBC after 12 years. Merry Christmas! Their transformation into Fox News continues apace.

WTF, @MSNBC? Firing progressive feminist @JoanWalsh two days before Christmas and keeping Hugh Hewitt? Shame on you. #purge

@joanwalsh back during the Bush Administration, Matthews had a round table on torture. You were the only one that, visibly exacerbated, pointed out that torture was freaking illegal. That’s when I fell for you, Joan. Head over heels.

Hey @MSNBC: firing @joanwalsh is a dumb decision, but there is an easy fix: whoever decided to fire her should be fired, because they are bad at their job.
Then re-hire Joan Walsh.
She’s smart, and good at her job.#KeepJoanWalsh pic.twitter.com/BA7zM1xcuQ

After work one day at @NFLFilms in 2010, I sat in the parking lot getting advice and encouragement from @joanwalsh. I was considering going write and produce for @MSNBC, and she helped me believe that I could do it. Seeing the network fire her now is disheartening, to be kind.

Food for thought on 2018 from @joanwalsh: https://t.co/mrWoENhbp6

Oh and lest we not forgotten the terrible loss of @tamronhall at @MSNBC and @NBCNews. For who? Megyn? Please.
Bring her back and keep @joanwalsh on the air. Ridiculousness on display.

It’s midnight Pacific on Christmas weekend and #SaveJoanWalsh is trending nationally. What does that tell you, @MSNBC?
You’re. Making. A. BIG. Mistake.
Keep @joanwalsh Do the nation a favor and #DumpHewitt

Here’s a funny thing, @realdonaldtrump: you think there’s only one @JoanWalsh. #WeAreAllJoanWalsh#KeepJoanWalsh @MSNBC @NBC pic.twitter.com/DgnCYRd3Ru

Firing @JoanWalsh in the current climate is an outrage. If anything recent events should prove the importance of having women’s voices helping to frame the narrative #KeepJoanWalsh https://t.co/9T6OdxYfYI

I thought @joanwalsh was an important voice on MSNBC. Sorry she was dropped. Why does a media outfit that can make room for @hughhewitt find none for Joan? https://t.co/tHBm65YHbY
— Laurence Tribe (@tribelaw) December 23, 2017
Lemme get this straight. The same network that keeps Hugh effing Hewitt on the payroll fired @joanwalsh, one of its smartest progressive women? Fix your shit, @msnbc. #KeepJoanWalsh https://t.co/00b094RSkh

As NCRM has reported, 2017 has been a tumultuous year for progressives on MSNBC. Andy Lack, chairman of NBC News and MSNBC, hired Megyn Kelly and gave Hugh Hewitt his own show. For quite some time, even Lawrence O’Donnell’s future on the network was in question.
