Kayla Moore: Roy and I Can’t Be Anti-Semitic Because ‘One of Our Attorneys Is a Jew’ (Video)

She Also Says: ‘We Have Very Close Friends Who Are Jewish and Rabbis’

Kayla Moore tried to defend her husband Roy and herself Monday night from allegations they are anti-Semitic, while speaking at the final rally ahead of Alabama’s special Tuesday election. It didn’t work well, and the story and video went viral overnight.

Roy Moore has been credibly accused by nine women of various inappropriate acts, from child molestation to sexual assault to aggressive pursuit of teen girls. He has been removed as Chief Justice of the state Supreme Court for ignoring the law while making his personal interpretation of the Christian Bible paramount.

While introducing her husband at a campaign rally – one of the few Moore has held, he has done little campaigning, refused to debate his Democratic opponent Doug Jones, and spent last weekend in Philadelphia – Moore offered this now infamous statement:

“Fake news would tell you that we don’t care for Jews. I tell you all this because I’ve seen it also. I just want to set the record straight while they’re here,” she said, in a Trumpian moment, while waving to the press. “One of our attorneys is a Jew. We have very close friends who are Jewish and rabbis, and we also fellowship with them.”

On Twitter, many were quick to remind the Moore’s that having friends who are Jewish doesn’t pre-empt one from being anti-Semitic.

The Week adds this less-reported portion of her speech:

After defending the candidate against accusations of anti-Semitism, Kayla Moore moved on to defending him against accusations of racism. “Fake news would also have you think that my husband doesn’t support the black community,” she said. “Yet my husband appointed the very first black marshal to the Alabama Supreme Court. We have many friends that are black and we also fellowship with them in church and in our home.”
