Franken Announces He Will Release a Statement Thursday As More Than 15 Democratic Senators Call for His Resignation
At Least 10 Women Democratic Senators Say Franken Should Go
Senator Al Franken is responding to calls by more than a dozen Democratic U.S. Senators and the chairman of the DNC by saying he will make an announcement Thursday. It is difficult to see how he can survive the rapidly-growning calls for him to step down amid sexual harassment and misbehavior accusations.Â
At least ten Democratic women Senators Wednesday morning, several in rapid succession, announced they believe it is time for the 66-year old Minnesota Democrat to leave resign. On social media, some are noting Democrats will not lose the seat as Minnesota’s governor, who would appoint Franken’s replacement, is a Democrat.
No Republican Senator has called for Franken to quit, but Democrats in the House, including Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, say it’s time for Franken to leave.
The Democratic women Senators include Kirsten Gillibrand (NY), Kamala Harris (CA), Maggie Hassan (NH), Claire McCaskill (MO), Mazie Hirono (HI), Patty Murray (WA), Tammy Baldwin (WI), Debbie Stabenow (MI), Heidi Heitkamp (ND), Maria Cantwell (WA).Â
Democratic men Senators have also begun to call for Franken to resign: Bob Casey (PA), Joe Donnelly (IN), Sherrod Brown (OH), Ed Markey (MA), Michael Bennet (CO), Dick Durbin (IL).
In the space of one hour the number of Democrats calling for Franken to go has doubled.
