Watch Speaker Paul Ryan as He Says He Hasn’t Given Any Thought to Supreme Court Anti-Gay Baker Case

‘I’ve Got Nothing for You’

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan showed exactly what he thinks of LGBT civil rights when asked about an upcoming critical Supreme Court case. Thursday, at Ryan’s press conference, Washington Blade reporter Chris Johnson asked the Wisconsin Republican what he thought of the Masterpiece Cake Shop case.

Speaker Ryan first acts like he’s never heard of it as he pauses to take a sip of water. Then, when told what the case is about, Ryan appears to roll his eyes, saying he hadn’t given it any thought.

The case will determine if people can discriminate against LGBT people and especially same-sex couples by claiming their faith demands they do so.

Johnson, writing at The Washington Blade, reports that while Speaker Ryan may be unfamiliar with the case, “Other congressional Republicans are aware of the case. A group of 86 congressional Republicans — led by Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) — signed a friend-of-the-court brief in favor of the Colorado baker.”

In short, it’s a big deal.

Arguments begin next week.
