Trump Confirms He Will Meet With Putin During Asian Tour

Confirmed on Air Force One

Late Saturday evening, and early Sunday in Tokyo, Donald Trump confirmed to reporters aboard Air Force One that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his 12-day Asian tour.

As CNN reported:

Air Force One landed at the US-controlled Yokota Air Base outside Tokyo at about 9:15 p.m. ET Saturday (10:15 a.m. Sunday local time). Trump is due to address American servicemen and women stationed at the facility before beginning his official visit with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Prior to the president’s address, however, reporters confirmed that the president approached them to discuss a few matters on the record. According to CNN’s Jim Acosta, Trump advised “I think it’s expected that we’ll meet. We want Putin’s help on North Korea.”

Earlier Saturday, the White House refused to explicitly confirm a Putin meeting, though Trump told Fox News it was possible the two would meet.

Reuters also reported Saturday that should the two heads of state meet, it may be to discuss “a Syria settlement at an Asian economic summit in Vietnam.”

This week, it was revealed that former Trump campaign foreign policy advisor George Papadopoulos secretly pled guilty to making false statements to the FBI, with statements involving Russian relations.

Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort was also indicted in Robert Mueller’s Russia probe, with charges that included “conspiracy against the United States.”
