Roy Moore Compared the ‘Family’ of Mass Murdering Cult Leader Charles Manson to Families Formed by Same-Sex Marriage

You Can’t ‘Say Everybody’s Got a Right to Marry Anybody They Want to, Because Then You Can Say Charles Manson Had a Family’ Moore Claimed

Roy Moore at least twice just two years ago compared families formed by same-sex marriage to Charles Manson’s “family,” and even said the legalization of same-sex marriage would lead to polygamous families like those formed by the cult leader and mass murderer who died in prison on Sunday. Moore also compared same-sex marriage to incest and bestiality.

“It’s not a question of equal protection of law,” Moore said in a 2015 radio interview with far right wing Christian conservative talk show host Jesse Lee Peterson. “Every person has the right to marry someone of the opposite gender. That’s always been true, that’s equal protection,” Moore said, inaccurately. Talking Points Memo on Monday first reported these new findings.

“You can’t extend equal protection, say everybody’s got a right to marry anybody they want to, because then you can say Charles Manson had a family and we’ve got to recognize that family,” Moore illogically concluded.

Also in 2015, the year the U.S. Supreme Court ruled same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marriage, Moore again compared same-sex marriage to Manson’s “family,” but went even further.

“You know who Charles Manson was? He had a family didn’t he? Well, it was called Charles Manson’s family, wasn’t it?” Moore told documentarian David Merriman. “But could they get married?”

After Merriman said Manson could legally have married one of his followers, Moore responded, “Why not two of them?”

Moore then went where many far right Christian conservatives seem to when arguing against the marriage rights of same-sex couples.

“I have horses. My wife has horses. She loves her horse. Should she be able to marry her horse?”

Moore, who has been a prosecutor and twice a state Supreme Court Chief Justice, knows the answer is no, in part because horses can’t consent.

And, of course, Moore continued down his road of ill-informed bigotry.

“Some men unfortunately love their daughter. And when she becomes of age, should they be able to get married?” he continued. “If it’s based on love, why shouldn’t a man be able to marry his daughter, and why shouldn’t a woman be able to marry her son?”
