Trump Continues to Refuse to Speak on Roy Moore, Again Has Press Secretary Cover for Him With Another Canned Comment

One Full Week Later, President Has Yet to Personally Say a Word on the Allegations Against Roy Moore

Exactly one week after the initial allegations of child sexual assault, and inappropriate behavior with teenaged girls were made in The Washington Post, followed up by reports in an Alabama news site, and at a press conference with an alleged victim charging she felt like she was going to be raped, President Donald Trump has personally not said a word.

Trump was overseas on a trip to Asia when the first allegations were made last Thursday. Through his press secretary days later he issued a wishy-washy statement, refusing to weigh in. Upon returning to the U.S., Trump has uncharacteristically refused to take a single question from the press despite holding a press event and walking through Congress this week.

Here was Trump on Wednesday:

Here was Trump on Thursday:

At every opportunity Trump has been repeatedly asked by reporters about Moore, the nominee of his own party to fill an open U.S. Senate seat for the state of Alabama.

During her first daily press briefing upon returning from the Asia trip, Sarah Huckabee Sanders Thursday was asked if the president believes Roy Moore’s accusers or if he thinks Moore should drop out of the race.

“Look, the president believes that these allegations are very troubling, and should be taken seriously, and he thinks that the people of Alabama should make a decision about who their senator should be,” Sanders told reporters.

Pressed if Trump thinks Moore should stay in the race despite accusations from at least eight or nine women, Sanders continued to evade.

“Look, the president said in his statement earlier this week if the allegations are true then Roy Moore should step aside. He still firmly believes that.”

Asked how Trump “would like see that truth proven,” Sanders again evaded.

“Look, I’m not going to get in to and litigate back and forth but the president’s been clear that if any of these allegations are true, allegations that he takes very seriously, he finds very troubling, if those do happen to be true he shaped do the right thing and step aside.”

Again pressed on how the truth should be proven, Huckabee Sanders was at a loss, finally concluding, “possibly by a court of law.” The statute of limitations on these allegations have long passed. Roy Moore will never see the insider of a courtroom on any allegations made to date.

“That’s also something that the people of Alabama need to make, not the president on whether or not they want Roy Moore to support them in the Senate.”

The choice of the word “support” was interesting.

Again, Donald Trump, who has tweeted up a storm since returning from Asia, and has had at least two opportunities to speak to reporters – not to mention, tweet – has yet to personally say a word on the allegations against Roy Moore.
