New Poll Shows Doug Jones Now Ahead of Roy Moore: ‘Tangible Evidence Democrats Are Clearly More Energized’

Disturbing Number More Likely to Support Republican After Allegations

A new poll shows Democrat Doug Jones has pulled ahead of Republican Roy Moore in the December 12 special Alabama Senate race, after a woman charged Moore with sexually assaulting her when she was 14 and he was 32. But a disturbing number of Republicans say they are now more likely to vote for Moore despite the graphic and well-supported allegations of child sexual assault, plus charges by three other women that Moore pursued them when they were between 16 and 18 years of age.

Now, according to a JMC analytics poll, 46 percent of Alabama voters plan to vote for Doug Jones, and 42 percent plan to vote for Moore. The previous poll showed Jones taking just 40 percent, and Moore 48 percent. The undecideds has dropped by two points, suggesting the news has swayed many of them to Jones’ side.

But the answers to this question are disturbing: “Given the allegations that have come out about Roy Moore’s alleged sexual misconduct against four underage women, are you more or less likely to support him as a result of these allegations?”

Just 38 percent said they now are less likely to vote for Moore, 33 percent say it makes no difference to them, and a nearly one in three Alabama voters (29%) say they are more likely to vote for Moore as a result.

The poll, conducted November 9-11, also says nearly six in 10 (58%) call themselves evangelical Christians.

The pollsters note that Moore margin of support “dropped 16 points among men and 6 points among women with leaners included.”

They conclude, “the political climate has become less favorable for Republicans even in Alabama,” and “there is tangible evidence that Democrats are clearly more energized.”
