‘I Really Don’t Think She Cares at All About What Civil Rights Are’ Says David Ermold

Two years ago in June of 2015 David Ermold and his fiancé walked in to the Rowan County, Kentucky clerk’s office to obtain a marriage license. They were denied. When they tried again the next month, they brought a camera and filmed county clerk Kim Davis refusing them a license. The rest, including Davis spending five days in jail for contempt of court, is history. 

Their video of Kim Davis denying them their right to marry has received over 1.8 million views.

Weeks later, with the nation’s eyes on them, they tried again, and were again refused:

Ultimately, Ermold, and his fiancé, David Moore, were married.

But Davis, a Republican elected to the office after years of her mother holding the same position, has never apologized. And she just announced on Tuesday she is seeking re-election.

No Democrat has announced they will challenge her, but Ermold is thinking about it.

“If Kim Davis was reelected in that position without an appropriate fight, I’d probably regret it for the rest of my life,” Ermold, an English professor, told WKU Public Radio.

“I think I could win,” Ermold told the Greenfield Recorder. “I don’t think that she has learned anything from the experience at all. I really, truly think that she feels like she is right. I really don’t think she cares at all about what civil rights are.”

The AP reports Ermold “said he believes he could win, but he is concerned about raising money for his first run for public office.”
