Kim Davis Announces Run for Re-Election

Once Jailed for Refusing to Issue Marriage Licenses

Republican Kim Davis is running for re-election, the AP reports. The Rowan County, Kentucky clerk who became infamous after using her religioun as a reason to refuse to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, through her attorney said she will ask voters to let her stay in office. 

No Democrat has stepped forward to challenge her for next year’s election.

Despite being an elected position, the Rowan County clerk’s office is something of a family business. Davis became county clerk in 2015, after her mother held the seat and decided to not seek re-election. Davis has worked in various positions in that office for decades, since 1991.

Davis was jailed by a federal judge in 2015 for contempt of court after refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Several couples sued Davis, and recently the state of Kentucky was ordered to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in court costs.

Last month Davis traveled to Romania to try to convince lawmakers to ban same-sex marriage.
