GOP Leaks Internal Poll Showing Moore Behind Jones by Double Digits
Jones Ahead by 12 Points, NRSC Poll Says
The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has just leaked an internal poll supposedly showing Republican Roy Moore behind his Democratic opponent, Doug Jones, by double-digits.
Moore, according to the poll, Politico reports, is not only down by 12 points, Jones now has a majority of Alabama votes: 51%. Moore comes in with just 39%.
“The poll shows a dramatic turn against Moore in Alabama,” Politico reports. “In early October, a committee poll had him leading by 16 points, and a survey early this month had him up by 9 points. Moore’s favorability numbers also tanked, from 49 percent in early October to 35 percent in the NRSC’s latest poll.”
The NRSC was the first body to dump Moore. They pulled their funding agreement with him last week after The Washington Post revelations. Assuming there’s a strategy behind the release of the poll, namely, an attempt to help ensure Moore does not win, the NRSC also suggests they don’t want Jeff Sessions to return to the Senate.
“Several sources who reviewed the poll results said it also tested how Attorney General Jeff Sessions would fare as a write-in candidate, and the results were not favorable.”
Statistician Nate Silver quickly urged caution on the poll:
I wouldn’t put much stock in that NRSC poll showing Moore way down, which presumably was “leaked” in order to get him out of the race.

NRSC Chairman Cory Gardner (R-CO) on Monday said Moore is “unfit to serve in the United States Senate and he should not run for office.â€
