Donald Trump Just Called The New York Times to Tell Them He’s ‘Not Angry at Anybody’
‘I’m Not Under Investigation, as You Know’ Trump Claims
The President of the United States took a full 24 hours after a terror attack in Manhattan that killed eight people and wounded 11 others to call the governor of New York and the mayor of New York City. But barely hours later, if that, President Trump had time to pick up the phone and call The New York Times to refute a story – in The Washington Post – that he was angry. Trump also took the time to tell Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Peter Baker that he is not under federal investigation, which his own chief of staff and others dispute.
Here’s how the Times explained the call:
“I’m not under investigation, as you know,†Mr. Trump said in a brief telephone call to The Times late Wednesday afternoon. Pointing to the indictment of his former campaign chief, Paul Manafort, the president said, “And even if you look at that, there’s not even a mention of Trump in there.â€
“It has nothing to do with us,†Mr. Trump said.
He also pushed back against a report published Monday night by The Washington Post, which the president said described him as “angry at everybody.â€
“I’m actually not angry at anybody,†Mr. Trump told The Times.
Many would disagree with the president’s statement that Monday’s indictments of two Trump campaign officials, including his former campaign chairman, plus the revelation that a foreign policy advisor to the campaign had pled guilty to lying to the FBI and has been cooperating with the Bureau for months doesn’t have anything to do with the campaign.
Many would also disagree with another claim Trump made to the Times: “I just got fantastic poll numbers.â€
It’s unclear what poll the president is referring to. Literally every recent national poll shows his disapproval numbers at historic highs and his approval numbers at historic lows.
But The UpShot, a New York Times column, did a good job of trolling the President, and, in a way, the Times itself:
“I’m actually not angry at anybody,†Trump told The Times just a little while ago. https://t.co/Ncb2M6VGYX
