So Much Winning! Democrats Sweep the Nation – Win Vast Majority of Races on First Election Day of Trump Era

‘We’re Going to Win So Much, You’re Going to Be So Sick and Tired of Winning’ Trump Said in 2016

Remember this?

That was candidate Donald Trump. He was wrong.

Tuesday night Democrats swept the nation. It’s hard to find races where Republicans beat Democrats.

The real story is not just that voters repudiated Donald Trump, the real story is that voters saw Trump, Trumpism, white supremacy, Neo-Nazism, anti-Islamic hate, homophobia, transphobia, “economic nationalism,” anti-immigrant hysteria, the threat of tens of millions losing healthcare while the billionaire club gets richer by first breaking then re-writing the rules, and they said “No.”

This was an embrace of Democratic values. This was voters across America, saying, “We have had enough.”

It was as if the January 21st Women’s March covered the nation at the voting booths.

Some key observations.

First, Virginia.

Not only did Democrat Ralph Northam win the governor’s race against a candidate who tried to run on Trumpism without Trump, he won by 9 points. Pundits on Monday thought it could go either way.

The Democratic candidates for Lt. Governor and Attorney General also won.

But in the Virginia House of Delegates, Democrats picked up at least 16 seats – which hardly anyone dared to imagine, reversing a GOP supermajority. But it gets better. There are at least 5 races that will undergo recounts. The Democrats could take the majority.

“This is not a wave. This is a tsunami,” Virginia Del. David Toscano, leader of the Democratic caucus, told The Hill Tuesday night. “This is a huge, huge sea change here in Virginia.”

“I don’t think there’s any way you can get away from the notion that this was a sound defeat for Donald Trump tonight with this outpouring of support for Democratic candidates,” Toscano said.

And in one of the best stories of the night, also in Virginia, Danica Roem became the first openly transgender candidate to be elected a state legislator. 

It gets even better. She ran against a virulent anti-LGBT lawmaker who wrote the state’s anti-trans “bathroom bill.” Delegate Bob Marshall for decades has been targeting and attacking the LGBT community. This is what justice looks like.

Democrat Phil Murphy was elected to become governor of New Jersey.

Democrat Jenny Durkan was elected Seattle’s first openly-lesbian mayor, and first woman mayor in nearly a century. 

Democrat Andrea Jenkins became the first openly transgender woman of color elected to the city council of a major U.S. city, Minneapolis.

Democrat Justin Fairfax was elected Virginia’s Lt. Governor. He becomes the second African-American to win statewide in the Commonwealth.

Democrat Sheila Oliver becomes New Jersey’s first woman African-American lieutenant governor.

Democrat Vi Lyles becomes Charlotte, North Carolina’s first woman African-American mayor.

Democrat Tyler Titus was elected to the Erie, Pennsylvania school board. He becomes the first openly transgender person ever elected in the Commonwealth.

Democrat Ravinder Bhalla was elected mayor of Hoboken, New Jersey, making him that city’s first ever Sikh American mayor.

Maine voters, by a 17-point margin, voted to expand Medicare in their state. Their GOP governor opposed the measure.

Not specific to Tuesday’s election, but ObamaCare enrollments, even though Trump cut the ad budget by 90%, have already hit record numbers.

But this is just the beginning. The hard work starts now. Anyone who threw their hands up in disgust a year ago, six months ago, a week ago: Time to get to work.
