‘The Last Republicans’: George W. and H.W. Bush Slam Trump in New Book

H.W. Confirms Clinton Vote

Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, it appears, have confirmed that they aren’t fans of Donald Trump.

“The Last Republicans,” The New York Times reported Saturday, is “the first book ever written with their cooperation about their relationship [opening] a window into the only father-and-son tandem to hold the presidency since John Adams and John Quincy Adams.”

The book, to be released November 14th by Harper Collins, will include commentary from the former presidents on Donald Trump, his presidency, and as the title suggests, George W. Bush’s concern over being “the last Republican president.”

“Indeed, at one point during the 2016 presidential campaign,” the outlet reported, “the younger Mr. Bush confided to the author, ‘I’m worried that I will be the last Republican president.”

The author in question, Mark K. Updegrove, noted that he believed the 43rd president’s commentary at the time was a reflection on his belief that Hillary Clinton would win the presidency. The author, historian and ABC contributor noted, however, that Bush’s values and the values of his father “are very much in contrast to the values of the Republican Party today, in particular that Donald Trump ran on, which is essentially protectionism and a certain xenophobia.”

As The Hill reported, Bush did speak out against Trump directly, however. “Wow,” Bush reportedly told the author, ““Wow, this guy doesn’t know what it means to be president,” the younger Bush said. He further indicated that “a president should not ‘exploit the anger, incite it,’ but rather ‘come up with the ideas to deal with it.’”

The book will further detail that George W. voted for “neither of the above” in the 2016 presidential election, but confirmed reports that George H.W. Bush did in fact vote for Hillary Clinton.

“I don’t like him,” H.W. told the author. “I don’t know much about him, but I know he’s a blowhard. And I’m not too excited about him being a leader.”

This month, George W. Bush delivered a speech attacking bigotry, nativism and white supremacy, an apparent rebuke of Donald Trump and his presidency. Following this,

Following this, as Donald Trump spent his third consecutive weekend golfing since assuming the presidency, George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush joined with Presidents Carter, Clinton and Obama to raise over $31 million for hurricane relief.
