Trump Meets Puerto Rico Hurricane Victim, Tells Him to ‘Have a Good Time’

Odd Remark to People Who Have Lost Everything

After chastising Puerto Rico for throwing the federal government budget “a little out of whack,” President Trump moved on from a meeting with Governor Ricardo Rosselló and headed to a local church.

Inside the Cavalry Chapel, Trump “picked up a can of tinned chicken breast and held it aloft for the crowd to see,” according to the press pool report. 

“He handed one man in the crowd a pack of batteries,” the report continues. “He held up a flashlight and showed it to the crowd, shaking hands the whole time.”

“Trump kept picking up items from tables laden with supplies, showing them to the crowd and handing them to people with outstretched hands.”

“‘There’s a lot of love in this room,’ the president said. ‘Great people.'”

“He moved to a pile of yellow bags containing rice and handed them to whoever was nearest. He tossed rolls of paper towels into the crowd. Two were caught but one fell onto the carpet. The first lady was handing out small boxed solar panels.”

Once outside, the president exchanged words for a brief moment with a victim of Hurricane Maria.

“We’re going to help you out,” Trump promises.

“Thank you,” the man responds.

“Have a good time,” President Trump said, adding, “It’s great to see you,” before leaving.

Unlike other visits to natural disasters, the White House restricted access to the president. He was filmed only by White House cameras during his meeting with the governor, and there was no press conference, as the White House announced Tuesday morning.
