Roy Moore Claims Obergefell ‘Compels Christians to Give Up Their Religious Freedom and Liberty’
Roy Moore, the Republican Party’s U.S. Senate nominee for a special race in Alabama says the Supreme Court’s 2015 Obergefell decision finding same-sex couples have a right to marry was worse than the Supreme Court’s faulty 1857 Dred Scott decision supporting slavery. Moore, the twice-booted former Alabama state Supreme Court chief justice made his remarks late in 2016, according to a report Tuesday in Talking Points Memo.
“In 1857 the United States Supreme Court did rule that black people were property,” Moore said in an interview with the Christian Emergency League. “Of course that contradicted the Constitution, and it took a civil war to overturn it.”
Moore, who thinks homosexuality should be illegal, went on to insist the marriage ruling will lead to polygamy.
“But this ruling in Obergefell is even worse in a sense because it forces not only people to recognize marriage other than the institution ordained of God and recognized by nearly every state in the union, it says that you now must do away with the definition of marriage and make it between two persons of the same gender or leading on, as one of the dissenting justices said, to polygamy, to multi-partner marriages.”Â
And Moore then falsely claimed the Obergefell decision strips Christians of their religious freedom, though he did not say how.
“We’ve got to go back and recognize that what they did in Obergefell was not only to take and create a right that does not exist under the Constitution but then to mandate that that right compels Christians to give up their religious freedom and liberty.”
The Dred Scott decision is universally held as the worst decision ever made by the Supreme Court.
Last week, Moore displayed his poor grasp of U.S. law by wrongly claiming it is illegal for NFL players to take a knee while the national anthem is playing.
