Putin Runs to Trump’s Defense: He ‘Won Honestly’ and Americans Must ‘Show Respect’

Putin’s Goal Has Been to Sow Discord Inside the US Political System

Russian Federation president Vladimir Putin is running to defend his American counterpart.

“Mr. Trump was elected by the American people,” Putin said Thursday, according to The Hill. “And at least for this reason, it is necessary to show respect for him, even if you do not agree with some of his positions,” he added, speaking to a Moscow-based think tank, the Valdai Discussion Club, while in Sochi, Russia.

Putin, whose goal reportedly was to sow discord and distrust in the American electoral system before deciding to try to install Donald Trump in the White House, also lamented the disrespect shown Trump. By disrespecting Trump, Putin suggested, Americans are disrespecting those who voted for him.

“Inside the country, disrespect is shown for him. This is a regrettable negative component of the US political system,” Putin said. He insisted that “one can argue but one can’t show disrespect, even not for him personally but for those people who voted for him.”

He added that because Trump successfully went through the “trial” of being elected without having prior experience as a candidate,  he “does not need any advice.”

“He won honestly,” Putin added.

Americans might be concerned to know that the topics of the forum wewre “Creative Destruction: Will a New World Order Emerge from the Current Conflicts?” and “A World of the Future: to Harmony through Collisions,” according to the Russian state news agency Tass.
