‘We Think That Right Is a Fundamental Right and Ought to Be Respected’
Attorney General Jeff Sessions told Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody that Christian cake bakers have “a fundamental right” to discriminate against same-sex couples and that right “ought to be respected.”
Sessions did not use the word “discriminate,” but rather, noted that there is more than one person or company in the business of baking cakes, and suggested same-sex couples should just go find a different one.
“I would just say to you that too often we have ignored what the Constitution actually says,” Sessions told Brody in the interview which aired Wednesday afternoon on Facebook. “It says Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of a religion nor prohibiting the free exercise thereof. So the question is, the cake baker has more than just a personal view here,” Sessions said on CBN’s Faith Nation.
“He has a religious view and he feels that he is not being able to freely exercise his religion by being required to participate in a ceremony in some fashion that he does not believe in,” the Attorney General said, without questioning the beliefs of the hypothetical “Christian cake baker” – a term the Christian Broadcasting Network uses. CBN did not mention bakers of other faiths.
“So we think that right is a fundamental right and ought to be respected as we work through this process. Of course in the 1990’s we passed a Religious Freedom Restoration Act that said the government should not constrict a person’s religious belief without a compelling reason to do so. So we think that statute has been ignored too often and not respected sufficiently. And so when you consider those two things, then you’re getting not only greater protection for people’s religious beliefs, that I think should be given.”
The Attorney General apparently does not understand the law. The Supreme Court has ruled the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA)Â only applies to federal laws created by Congress that somehow infringe on religious liberty. There’s no federal law requiring bakers to bake cakes for same-sex couples, so the RFRA law does not apply. All these “religious liberty” cases, including bakers, florists, and photographers, are in response to state, not federal law.
The clip is at CBN and the full show is embedded above. The relevant portion starts at about the -29:00 mark.

Experts: Trump’s Denial of Trusting Putin More Than US Intelligence ‘Sure Sounds More Like a Confirmation’
President Donald Trump kicked off Tuesday by blasting John Bolton, after numerous articles show his former National Security Advisor questioning the president’s strange allegiance to Russian President Vladimir Putin. In one, Bolton says Trump’s meeting with Putin in Helsinki was the incident that shocked him the most.
That was in 2018, when Trump stood next to the Russian President, told the world that Putin denied “meddling” in the U.S. election, and that Trump beloved Putin – over the U.S. intelligence community.
In response, on Tuesday Trump called Bolton “one of the dumbest people I’ve met in government.” He said Bolton “states often that I respected, and even trusted, Vladimir Putin of Russia more than those in our Intelligence Agencies.” And then tries to deny it is true by making a very odd statement.
“While of course that is not true, if the first people you met from so called American Intelligence were Dirty Cops who have now proven to be sleazebags at the highest level like James Comey, proven liar James Clapper, & perhaps the lowest of them all, Wacko John Brennan who headed the CIA, you could perhaps understand my reluctance to embrace!”
Experts are saying Trump’s attempt to deny the accusations he trusts the President of the Russian Federation more than the U.S. Intelligence Community sounds more like a confirmation than a denial.
Professor of international relations, political scientist and journalist David Rothkopf:
This denial that Trump trusted Putin more than the Intelligence Community sure sounds more like a confirmation that it’s true. Perhaps that is because it is true. (This is just more evidence to that effect.) https://t.co/RSH1YerdDs

Bloomberg Opinion columnist, author of “TrumpNation” Tim O’Brien:
“The man has very strong control over a country. Now, it’s a very different system and I don’t happen to like the system, but certainly in that system, he’s been a leader. Far more than our president has been a leader.” – Trump on Putin, 9/7/16 https://t.co/uNLDUjBOEP

George Conway Burns to the Ground Trump Supporters Who Are Suckered by His Lies
On Monday, writing for The Washington Post, conservative attorney and Lincoln Project co-founder George Conway excoriated Trump supporters, by writing a parody of what one might say in defense of the president.
“I believe Joe Biden is ‘Sleepy’ and ‘weak.’ I believe Biden could ‘hurt God’ and the Bible,” wrote Conway, the husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway and a vocal critic of the president from the right for years. “I believe that if Biden is elected, there will be ‘no religion, no anything,’ and he would confiscate all guns, ‘immediately and without notice.’ He would ‘abolish’ ‘our great,’ ‘beautiful suburbs,’ not to mention ‘the American way of life.’ There would be ‘no windows, no nothing’ in buildings.”
By contrast, Conway wrote, when it comes to Trump, “I believe it’s normal for the president to say ‘Yo Semites’ and ‘Yo Seminites,’ ‘Thigh Land,’ ‘Minne-a-napolis,’ ‘toe-tally-taria-tism,’ ‘Thomas Jeffers’ and ‘Ulyss-eus S. Grant.’ I believe it’s Biden who’s cognitively impaired. I believe the president ‘aced’ a ‘very hard’ impairment test, and that his ‘very surprised’ doctors found this ‘unbelievable.’ I believe it was ‘amazing’ he remembered five words, such as ‘person, woman, man, camera, TV’ — in correct order. I believe he took the SAT himself.”
Conway also went after the president’s racism and incompetence fighting coronavirus.
“I believe that the president has done a tremendous job fighting the virus — and that he shouldn’t ‘take responsibility at all’ — even though about 160,000 Americans have died. I believe the virus ‘is what it is,’” wrote Conway. “I believe it isn’t racist to call the coronavirus ‘kung flu’ or ‘the China Virus.’ It isn’t racially divisive to say Black Lives Matter is a ‘symbol of hate,’ to celebrate Confederate generals as part of our ‘Great American Heritage,’ or to share video of someone shouting ‘white power,’ which, like displaying the Confederate flag, is ‘freedom of speech.’”
And above all, Conway wrote, “I believe the president won the popular vote in 2016 ‘if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally.’ I believe he shouldn’t accept the election results if he loses in November.”

Trump Again Dangerously Claims Children Are ‘Essentially Immune’ and ‘Don’t Transfer’ the Coronavirus. That’s False.
President Donald Trump on Monday told reporters that children are “virtually immune,” don’t transport or transfer the coronavirus, and just a “tiny fraction” of those who become infected die. Most of that is false, and dangerously so.
“They get better very quickly,” Trump continued. “But, as you know, the seriousness of it and what it leads to is extraordinarily small.”
Asked if he still believes children are essentially immune, as he falsely stated just five days ago, the President replied, “Yeah. I think that for the most part they do very well. They don’t get very sick, they don’t catch it easily, and according to the people that I’ve spoken to they don’t transport or transfer it to other people, or certainly not very easily.”
97,000 children across a two-week period tested positive for the coronavirus at the end of July. And while the fatality rate is lower among children, there are other diseases they (and adults) can get. Among children, “a rare but severe condition that has been reported approximately 2–4 weeks after the onset of COVID-19 in children and adolescents,” Associated Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (AMIS), has been reported, the CDC said on its website last week.
Children, especially those ten and older, studies show, transmit the coronavirus at the same rate as adults.
REPORTER: 97,000 children tested positive for coronavirus in the last week of July. Does that give you any pause about schools reopening for in-person learning?
REPORTER: So do you still think kids are essentially immune?
