BREAKING: US Pulls Out of Key United Nations Agency That Promotes Peace, Security, Human Rights, Rule of Law
One More Step Toward US Isolation and Nationalization
The U.S. State Dept. has just announced the United States is withdrawing from UNESCO, a key United Nations agency dedicated to the promotion of peace and security through collaboration. State Dept. spokesperson Heather Nauert cited what she claims is an “anti-Israel bias,” along with “mounting arrears” as America’s reasons for pulling out.
WHY THIS MATTERS: President Trump and his administration are increasingly abdicating America’s power to other nations. China and Russia benefit every time America refuses to take the lead. Under President Trump, America’s status as the leader of the free world and a super power is increasingly being weakened.Â
“The United States indicated,” Nauert added, “its desire to remain engaged with UNESCO…to contribute U.S. views” on issues including “the protection of world heritage, advocating for press freedoms, and promoting scientific collaboration and education.”
For the past 24 hours President Donald Trump has been attacking the news media by threatening to review and possibly revoke their licenses (something that he cannot do for a multitude of reasons.)
It’s unclear in the Trump administration what “world heritage” means, but UNESCO works to help protect areas of cultural significance, like the pyramids of Egypt.
UNESCO is not an agency most Americans are familiar with.
Via its website:
UNESCO is responsible for coordinating international cooperation in education, science, culture and communication. It strengthens the ties between nations and societies, and mobilizes the wider public so that each child and citizen:
• has access to quality education; a basic human right and an indispensable prerequisite for sustainable development;
• may grow and live in a cultural environment rich in diversity and dialogue, where heritage serves as a bridge between generations and peoples;
• can fully benefit from scientific advances;
• and can enjoy full freedom of expression; the basis of democracy, development and human dignity.
