Anti-Choice Republican Who Urged His Mistress to Get an Abortion Refuses to Resign, Will Not Seek Re-Election

Praised by Anti-Gay Hate Group for His Family Values

A Republican U.S. Congressman from Pennsylvania who actively opposes a woman’s constitutional right to have an abortion will not resign after urging his mistress to get an abortion. Rep. Tim Murphy Wednesday evening announced he will, however, not seek re-election next year, and will serve until the end of his term.

“In the coming weeks I will take personal time to seek help as my family and I continue to work through our personal difficulties and seek healing. I ask you to respect our privacy during this time,” Murphy, who is married, said in a statement. “I plan to spend my remaining months in office continuing my work as the national leader on mental health care reform, as well as issues affecting working families in southwestern Pennsylvania.”

In a text message the woman with whom Murphy is having an extra-marital affair charged, “you have zero issue posting your pro-life stance all over the place when you had no issue asking me to abort our unborn child just last week when we thought that was one of the options,” the woman wrote on Jan. 25, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Tuesday afternoon.

In response, Rep. Murphy said: “I get what you say about my March for life messages. I’ve never written them. Staff does them. I read them and winced. I told staff don’t write any more. I will.”

The newspaper adds that Rep. Murphy “has been lauded by the Family Research Council, for his stance on abortion, as well as for family values, generally. He also has been endorsed by LifePAC, which opposes abortion rights, and is a member of the House Pro-Life Caucus, an affiliation that is often cited by his office.”
