Trump: NFL ‘Going to Hell’ Unless They Ban Anthem Protests

‘You Cannot Have People Disrespecting Our National Anthem’

President Donald Trump has issued an ultimatum, of sorts, to the NFL.

“I think the NFL is in a box, I think they’re in a really bad box,” Trump said Wednesday afternoon before heading to Indiana to deliver a speech on his tax cuts for the wealthy. “You look what’s happening with their ratings, frankly, the only thing doing well in the NFL is the pregame because everybody wants to see what’s going on.”

“You cannot have people disrespecting our national anthem, our flag, our country and that’s what they’re doing,” Trump added. “And in my opinion, the NFL has to change. Or you know what’s going to happen? Their business is going to hell.”

Bloomberg reports the NFL’s ratings have been down recently, but attribute that in part to Hurricane Irma.

This is the sixth day in a row Trump has attacked the NFL and its players, some of whom are silently protesting racial oppression and police killings of Black people. President Trump has falsely equated this with being un-patriotic and protesting America’s veterans, which is entirely false.
