Trump Kicks Off Fifth Day of Attacks on NFL Players – Because His Breitbart Base Loves It

‘Great Anger’

Americans Tuesday morning woke up to the fifth straight day of unrelenting attacks by President Trump on NFL players who are silencing protesting racial oppression and inequality and police shootings of Black people across the nation. And as it turns out, there’s a reason the president has invested so much in these assaults on the professional athletes: his Breitbart base is loving it.

“Breitbart Editor-in-Chief Alexander Marlow said metrics indicated that a Sunday morning post on the topic by the site’s Facebook account had greater reach than any post in Breitbart history,” Politico reported Monday afternoon.

This appears to be that post:

It has over a half-million shares. The players’ protests have nothing to do with the armed forces or veterans, but Breitbart is Breitbart.

Breitbart, of course is the far right wing website headed by former Trump White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, who calls it the “platform for the alt-right.” The two reportedly keep in touch every few days.

Marlow called the players’ protests “the radicalization of the NFL,” and he says his readers are not supportive.

“It’s being encouraged by the media, it’s being encouraged by Hollywood and I don’t think that people, at least if the comments and the phone calls to Breitbart are any reflection, I don’t think they like it. They just want neutrality, they don’t want politics in football games.”

On Monday night, President Trump finally remembered Puerto Rico had been devastated by Hurricane Maria – the U.S. territory may not have power for four to six months. Instead of calling on Congress to pass a relief bill, instead of urging Americans to support their fellow citizens on the island of 3.5 million people, Trump literally blamed Puerto Rico for the devastation caused by the hurricane.

Tuesday morning, rather than “fixing” his previous comments on Puerto Rico, Trump started a Twitter rant that began with three tweets attacking the NFL players.

Expect Trump’s attacks on the NFL players to continue.
