After Mueller Was Appointed Trump Called Sessions an ‘Idiot’ – Sessions Called It His Most Humiliating Experience
Trump “Called Him an ‘Idiot,’ and Said That He Should Resign”
President Trump spent weeks earlier this year publicly attacking his attorney general, Jeff Sessions. But, as it turns out, Sessions did not resign during those very ugly public attacks because he had already done so earlier – and his resignation had not been accepted.
After Sessions was forced to recuse himself from the Russia investigation, and as the White House learned that Robert Mueller had been hired as special counsel, President Trump lashed out at Sessions in a “humiliating” Oval Office meeting attended by a handful of aides.
“Mr. Trump told Mr. Sessions that choosing him to be attorney general was one of the worst decisions he had made, called him an ‘idiot,’ and said that he should resign,” The New York Times reports. “An emotional Mr. Sessions told the president he would resign and left the Oval Office.”

The Times report adds that “Mr. Sessions told the president he would quit and sent a resignation letter to the White House, according to four people who were told details of the meeting. Mr. Sessions would later tell associates that the demeaning way the president addressed him was the most humiliating experience in decades of public life.”
Vice President Mike Pence, Reince Priebus, and Steve Bannon reportedly talked Trump out of accepting Sessions’ letter of resignation.
