Steve Bannon: Firing James Comey Was Biggest Mistake in Modern Political History (Video)

‘We Would Not Have a Special Counsel’ if Come Had Not Been Fired Says Bannon

Former Trump White House chief strategist Steve Bannon says the firing of FBI Director Jim Comey was the greatest mistake in modern political history. Bannon, in a rambling interview with CBS News “60 Minutes,” acknowledged that if Trump had not fired Comey, there would be no special counsel investigation into Russia’s interference in the U.S. election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

CBS News’ Charlie Rose asked Bannon if it’s true that he called the Comey firing the biggest mistake in history.

“That probably would be too bombastic, even for me, but maybe modern political history,” Bannon, who was fired from the White House last month, responded.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt that if James Comey had not been fired,” Bannon added, “we would not have a special counsel.”

“We would not have the Mueller investigation in the breadth that clearly Mr. Mueller is going,” he said.

The Washington Post notes Bannon’s “statement was extraordinary considering all the political mistakes made in ‘modern history,’ including but not limited to the Watergate cover-up by President Richard M. Nixon and the related Saturday Night Massacre, the Iran-Contra affair during the administration of President Ronald Reagan and President Bill Clinton’s dalliance with Monica Lewinsky, just for starters.”

This is a segment of the interview not included in Sunday evening’s broadcast.

It’s been widely reported that Jared Kushner, the Senior Advisor to the President and Trump’s son-in-law, pushed for Comey to be fired.
