Roy Moore So Toxic the Democratic Candidate in Alabama’s Special Senate Race Now Statistically Tied With Him

One Out of Four Republicans Would Rather Vote for a Democrat

In the deep red state of Alabama, which President Donald Trump won by almost 30 points over Hillary Clinton, some GOP voters are so concerned about electing Roy Moore they’re saying they would vote for the Democrat. The state is holding a special election to fill the seat once held by then-U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions, who is now Trump’s Attorney General.

Roy Moore is the twice-former Chief Justice of the Alabama State Supreme Court, most recently out of that job after being suspended until the end of his elected term for his direction to Alabama judges undermining a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage.

Moore’s behavior and remarks have become so toxic that even in Alabama, voters are turning to the alternatives.

Moore is leading his Republican opponent, Luther Strange, in the primary runoff to determine who will be the GOP nominee this month. But for the special election in December he’s statistically tied with Democrat Doug Jones.

A poll from Emerson College shows “Judge Roy Moore leading Sen. Luther Strange (R-Ala.) by a 14-point margin ahead of the GOP’s special election primary runoff on Sept. 26,” The Hill reports.

But both Republicans would hold only a slim advantage over Jones, according to the poll — Moore leads Jones by 4 percentage points, while Strange leads him by 3 points.

That’s within the 4.8 percent margin of error.

One-quarter of Moore’s primary voters said they’d rather vote for the Democrat than Strange, while 31 percent of Strange’s voters said they’d pick the Democrat over their primary rival.”

In January of 2016, well after the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell, Moore instructed all state probate judges to not issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. That led to his suspension. He ultimately resigned to run for the open Senate seat.

On Monday NCRM reported that Moore has appeared at least five times with a religious right wing Christian pastor who says gays are “worthy of death.”
