Trump Endorsed Losing Candidate
Judge Roy Moore has won the primary runoff election against Luther Strange and will now become Alabama’s Republican nominee in the race to fill the U.S. Senate seat of Jeff Sessions. Strange, who was appointed to the Senate when Sessions became Attorney General, was endorsed by President Donald Trump. Moore was endorsed by Steve Bannon, Sarah Palin, Sebastian Gorka, and Louie  Gohmert.
Moore, a racist, homophobic birther who twice was elected Chief Justice for the Alabama state Supreme Court, and twice was kicked off the court, will face Democrat Doug Jones in a special election in December. The two are statistically tied, with Moore a few points ahead.
A recent poll found some GOP voters find Moore so toxic they would vote for Jones, even in deep red Alabama.
That a Trump-endorsed candidate who is well-known in the state – Strange was the state Attorney General before being appointed to the US Senate – should lose, and lose by double-digits, should be extraordinarily embarrassing to the president. And it shows Trump is not a powerful as many believe.
It is a devastating blow to Trump and his brand.
With 45% of counties reporting, Moore has been declared the winner, 57% to 42% – a 15 point difference, per The New York Times.
