Judge Orders ‘Pharma Bro’ Martin Shkreli Jailed After Offering to Pay Supporters $5000 for Clinton’s Hair
Prosecutors Call Shkreli a ‘Danger to the Community’
“Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli, already convicted in a securities fraud case, has just had his $5 million bond revoked and has been ordered to jail. The former pharmaceuticals entrepreneur after his trial ended had posted a message on Facebook to supporters saying he would pay $5000 for a hair from former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s head. Shkreli claimed to have Clinton’s DNA and said he would sequence the hair to the sample he had.
Federal prosecutors last week said Shkreli’s behavior indicated he is a “danger to the community.†The New York Post reports a federal judge on Wednesday called Shkreli a “danger to society.”
Shkreli was forced to write a letter of apology, but apparently it was insufficient.
Judge Kiyo Matsumoto on Wednesday ordered the 34-year old Shkreli to jail, CNBC reports.
The letter of apology acknowledged he used “poor judgment” and was an “awkward attempt” to be humorous.Â
“I wanted to personally apologize to this Court and my lawyers for the aggravation that my recent postings have caused,” Shkreli’s letter reads. “I understand now that some may have read my comments about Mrs. Clinton as threatening, when that was never my intention when making those comments.”
“I used poor judgment but never intended to cause alarm or promote any act of violence whatsoever,” he claimed.
