Gen. Mike Flynn Returns to Twitter – to Announce His Legal Defense Fund

Flynn’s Legal Problems Becoming Expensive

Retired general Mike Flynn has just posted his first tweet since December of 2016, announcing his family and friends have established a fund to help him pay his legal defense bills. The former Trump administration National Security Advisor, who was previously fired by President Barack Obama, is under investigation for a myriad of possible offenses. His ties to Russia, including the infamous trip to Russia during which he delivered a paid speech without disclosing it while sitting at the same table as President Vladimir Putin and Jill Stein could be just the tip of the iceberg.

Flynn acted as a foreign agent, even while working in the Trump White House and for the Trump campaign, again only disclosing that fact retroactively. He was paid large fees from foreign governments.

“Flynn earned over $1.3m for speeches to Russian companies and lobbying for a Turkish firm,” The Associated Press reported in April.

“The candidate he was advising last fall was running on a platform of America First. The client he was working for last fall was paying him more than $500,000 to put Turkey first,” The New York Times reported in March.

And in May, Vox reported, “we know about roughly three allegations of wrongdoing that Flynn is either for sure or possibly wrapped up in: lying about payments from foreign governments, the investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, and lying about his meetings with Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Any one of these could potentially get Flynn into hot water with the FBI.”

The truth, it seems, is that Flynn has behaved very badly — and attracted a lot of attention from the authorities. Trump was right to worry that Flynn might be in trouble.

Flynn’s legal defense fund generously describes his current circumstances, which appear to be all his own doing.

“The costs of legal representation associated with responding to the multiple investigations that have arisen in the wake of the 2016 election place a great burden on Mike and his family. They are deeply grateful for considering a donation to help pay expenses relating to his legal representation,” the site reads.

Interestingly, it specifies “the Michael T. Flynn Legal Defense Fund will accept donations only from U.S. citizens and permanent residents.”

At last year’s Republican National Convention Flynn led chants of “lock her up,” referring to Hillary Clinton.
