Donald Trump: I Have ‘No Second Thoughts’ About Killing DACA
‘I Certainly Hope’ Congress Acts President Says
Speaking briefly with reporters while holding a meeting with Republican Congressional leaders in the Oval Office President Trump made clear his feelings about having killed DACA on Tuesday: “No second thoughts.”
When asked if he thinks Congress will act to save the program, the president’s remarks were equally terse: “I hope they do. I certainly hope they do.”

On Tuesday, Trump had Attorney General Jeff Sessions announce his decision to kill the immigration program designed to keep families together and protect undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. by their parents as children. About 800,000 DREAMers are affected.
Despite Trump’s recent and previous claims that he “loves” the DREAMers, and has a “great heart” for them, the White House’s talking points clearly urges those who will lose their DACA status to self-deport. It literally says DREAMers should use the time they have remaining “to prepare for and arrange for their departure from the U.S.”
Trump gave Congress six months to act on immigration, but has not advocated for a bill to make the DACA program permanent.
A new poll released Tuesday shows that deporting DREAMers has the support of just 15 percent of Americans. It and other polls also find the vast majority of Americans believe undocumented immigrants should be allowed to stay in the U.S., and be offered a path to citizenship.
Shortly after Trump killed the program, former president Barack Obama issued a rare statement, criticizing the decision.Â
