Pivots to ObamaCare, Benghazi
Kellyanne Conway squirmed and pivoted on Sunday when confronted with the White House’s conflicting statements on the drafting of Donald Trump Jr.’s misleading statement about his meeting last year with a Russian lawyer et al.
News broke last week that Donald Trump personally dictated the statement his son provided to The New York Times claiming his previously undisclosed June 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer was merely about Russian adoptions—a fact that the president’s lawyer Jay Sekulow repeatedly disputed.
Following the news, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders claimed Donald Trump “weighed in on†the statement’s drafting, “as any father would,†directly contradicting Sekulow.
On ABC’s “This Week†Sunday, host George Stephanopoulos asked Conway about the contradictions directly, even playing the White House Counselor a video of Jay Sekulow’s denial that the president was involved and of Huckabee Sanders’ words.
“This story has persisted because the White House and the president’s surrogates have told conflicting stories,†Stephanopoulos said. “Two very different answers in the space of two weeks there, Kellyanne.â€
Conway deflected, echoing Huckabee Sanders’ assertions that Trump weighed in as “any father would†before Stephanopoulos challenged her further, noting the White House’s problem with “telling the truth.â€
“Okay, well let’s talk about telling the truth,†Conway responded. “Let’s talk about [President Barack Obama] looking Americans in the eye who are still suffering, eight years later, who were lied to… Benghazi happened because of a video…â€
Stephanopoulos interrupted, noting she was changing the subject. “You’re going back to President Obama and Hillary Clinton. Right there, I said… directly different responses within two weeks. How do you explain that?â€
