Several Dead, Many Injured as Large Van Plows Into Crowd in Barcelona

Perpetrators Believed to Be Armed and in Hiding

A “massive” white van Thursday plowed into a crowd in Barcelona. Initial reports say two people are dead, and up to 20 have been injured. Those figures likely will change. Police believe the incident is terrorism, again according to initial reports. The operators of the van fled on foot and are believed to be armed and “holed up in a bar.”

The van crashed into people in the Las Ramblas district, a pedestrian mall popular with tourists.

“Las Ramblas, a street of stalls and shops that cuts through the center of Barcelona, is one of the city’s top tourist destinations. People walk down a wide, pedestrianized path in the center of the street, but cars can travel on either side,” the AP reports.

“The Spanish newspaper El Pais quoted unnamed police sources as saying the perpetrators of the crash were holed up in a bar in Tallers Street. There was no immediate police confirmation of the report.”
