Trump: Statues Honoring Racist Confederate Traitors Are ‘Beautiful’ – Removing Them Ripping Apart America

‘Our Great Country Being Ripped Apart’

Unable and unwilling to back away from neo-Nazis and white supremacists angry the nation is taking down statues of Confederate traitors to the United States, President Trump Thursday morning called the monuments “beautiful” and said their removal is ripping apart America.

“Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments,” Trump tweeted just after 9 AM. “You can’t change history, but you can learn from it,” Trump said.

The President then, again, conflated the founding fathers with confederate generals.

Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson – who’s next, Washington, Jefferson? So foolish!” he added. “Also the beauty that is being taken out of our cities, towns and parks will be greatly missed and never able to be comparably replaced!” he concluded.

At this point it is impossible to believe that President Trump is unaware that these statues pay homage to men who were willing to give their lives so that white Americans could own Black people. It is impossible to believe that Trump is unaware how these state-sponsored icons of racism, slavery, and white supremacy, these honorifics to men who literally committed treason against the nation, negatively affect many Americans.

As far as Trump’s comments about learning from history, remember that, according to a 1990 VANITY FAIR article, “Ivana Trump told her lawyer Michael Kennedy that from time to time her husband reads a book of Hitler’s collected speeches, My New Order, which he keeps in a cabinet by his bed.”

In the early morning hours on Wednesday, under darkness, Baltimore removed four Confederate statues. Other cities will be taking their statues down.

Many on social media disagreed with the President:
