Trump’s Response to Charlottesville Costs Him Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars as Charities Cancel Mar-a-Lago Galas
$200,000 to $550,000
President Donald Trump’s response to the white supremacist violence and murder in Charlottesville this past weekend on Thursday cost him an estimated $200,000 to $550,000 as two national non-profits canceled plans to hold fundraisers at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach.
The American Cancer Society and the Cleveland Clinic on Thursday announced the cancellations, making clear they are tied to Trump’s comments on white supremacism, according to The Washington Post.Â
“The cancellations will hit one of the biggest moneymakers for what Trump calls the ‘winter White House,’ where similar-sized events have often earned the club between $100,000 and $275,000 a piece,” the Post reports.
“Our values and commitment to diversity are critical as we work to address the impact of cancer in every community,” the American Cancer Society said, according to Politico. “It has become increasingly clear that the challenge to those values is outweighing other business considerations.”
The Cleveland Clinic issued a more terse statement.
“After careful consideration, Cleveland Clinic has decided that it will not hold a Florida fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago in 2018,” the medical group said in a statement. “We thank the staff of Mar-a-Lago for their service over the years.”
In June the Post reported “seven nonprofit organizations — all repeat customers of the president’s club — have announced their decisions to avoid Mar-a-Lago next winter during the social season, when Palm Beach life revolves around lavish parties for charity.”
